Sweeten the deal at interview stage
Employ the right interview techniques when recruiting and you will save time, energy and money, says Kevin Chapman, Sarina Russo Job Access manager in Fortitude Valley.
Mr Chapman said as part of its $1 million worth of local jobs campaign, Sarina Russo Job Access had developed a 10-point recruitment plan so employers could select the right person for the job.
He said an employer visit assisted with matching the right candidates to the role, along with building a good rapport.
- Follow the 80/20 rule. Get the job seeker to do 80 per cent of the talking.
- Ask open ended questions beginning with "what", "how", "why", "when" or "where".
- Avoid closed questions beginning with "did", "would", "do" and "are".
- Ask probing questions beginning with "Tell me more", "Describe to me" and "Explain to me".
- Use the power of silence. Pause while waiting for an answer.
- A job seeker's past job performance is the surest guide to his/her future performance.
- A good job fit equals right education plus right experience plus compatible personality.
- Beware of the "just like me" trap. Focus on the job's requirements and the candidate's qualifications.
- Help the job seeker feel at ease.
- Don't make assumptions.
