Eight-point plan to landing that job
JOBSEEKERS can follow a simple eight-step job search plan to help them get that job, says John Bridge Sarina Russo Job Access manager at Logan Central.
Mr Bridge said as part of a $1 million worth of local jobs campaign for the Logan West Leader area, Sarina Russo wanted to promote the best way for local jobseekers to market themselves to potential employers.
STEP 1-SET GOALS
All successful people set goals. To get the job you want you must set specific, measurable and timely goals. For example to phone three employers every day.
STEP 2- DETERMINE SALARY EXPECTATIONS
Think about a long-term salary goal and then a short-term salary goal. Will you need to undertake more training and skill development to reach your preferred salary level?
STEP 3- RESEARCH INDUSTRY SECTOR
Find out what the employer is looking for in an employee - the level of qualifications, experience, attitudes, image, and so on.
STEP 4-SELF DEVELOPMENT
Understand what you need to improve about yourself and whether you have the necessary qualities for the job.
STEP 5- DEVELOPING A PROSPECT LIST
Make a list of employers to target. Include the company name, address, telephone number, names / titles to be contacted and background on the company.
STEP 6- SELF PROMOTION
A good resume is like your own personal advertisement. Develop a good hard copy and electronic version of your resume, application letter and thank you letter. Practise your interview skills.
STEP 7- BE A PROACTIVE JOB SEARCHER
Actively look for a job because the job won’t look for you. Visit your local Job Network provider who can assist you with relevant job search advice and where to access the latest job information.
STEP 8 THE INTERVIEW
The interview is a sales presentation with you as the product. Prepare yourself before the interview. List the likely questions you will be asked and how you will answer them. Understand your personal qualities and the benefits you will offer the employer. Know the company. When you meet the interviewer, shake hands, smile and look them in the eye. Be confident in your posture and voice. Be polite.
